How to Choose a Nail Course in the UK: 9 Things to Check Before You Book

How to Choose a Nail Course in the UK: 9 Things to Check Before You Book

If you're thinking about becoming a nail tech, you've probably already noticed there are hundreds of nail courses out there, and honestly, they are not all created equal. Some will set you up for a career you love, and some will leave you with a certificate you can't get insured with and a kit you'll never use again.

I've been in the nail industry for over 12 years and I've been teaching for more than 6, and a lot of the students who come to me at Blossom Academy have already done a course somewhere else. So this is the guide I wish every one of them had read first. It's the list I'd give a friend who asked me where to train to do nails.

1. Is the course accredited, and by whom?

This is the big one. Before anything else, check that your course is accredited by a recognised body such as the ABT (Associated Beauty Therapists), or that it leads to a regulated qualification like VTCT or City & Guilds.

Accreditation matters because it's what allows you to get professional insurance, and without insurance you can't legally and safely work on paying clients. Please don't just take a website's word for it. Ask the academy directly which body accredits the course and whether that accreditation is accepted by insurers.

2. Can I get insured straight after the course?

A good academy will be able to tell you exactly which insurers accept their certificate. With an ABT-accredited course, most students can arrange insurance as soon as they qualify, which means you can start building your client list straight away rather than waiting months.

3. How many students are in each class?

Nails is a hands-on skill. You learn by doing, getting it slightly wrong, and having someone show you how to fix it in the moment. In a class of 12 or more, you'll spend a lot of time waiting for the trainer to reach you.

Look for small groups or one-to-one options. At Blossom, our group courses are kept to 5 students so every learner gets proper time with their trainer, and we offer 1:1 training for anyone who'd rather learn completely at their own pace.

4. Who is actually teaching you?

Ask how long your trainer has been doing nails, not just teaching. A trainer who is still working with real clients will teach you the things that only come from experience: how to handle a lifting complaint, how long a set should realistically take you, and what clients actually ask for right now.

5. Does the course include live models?

Practising on tips is useful, but nothing prepares you for real clients like working on real hands. Check whether the course includes practice on live models, and whether you need to bring your own.

6. What's in the kit, and is it professional quality?

A kit can make or break your first few months. Ask for a full list of what's included and check it's made up of professional products you can keep buying once you're qualified, not a one-off bundle of unbranded products you'll need to replace immediately.

If you're investing in your own equipment after training, it's worth choosing tools built for daily professional use. (That's exactly why I founded MUSE, our professional nail tools brand.)

7. What support do you get after the course?

This is where a lot of academies go quiet. Your first few weeks after qualifying are when the real questions come up, so ask what happens once the course ends. Is there a WhatsApp group, a private community, or a trainer you can message with photos of your work?

Our students stay part of the Blossom community long after their course finishes, because honestly, that's when you need us most.

8. Is there a clear path to what comes next?

A beginner course is the start, not the finish. Look for an academy that can take you from your first gel polish course through to extensions, nail art and eventually the business side of things, so you're not starting from scratch with a new academy every time you want to grow.

At Blossom, our courses are designed as a journey: Beginner Courses, Advanced Courses, and our business course, Booked & Beyond.

9. What do past students say?

Read the reviews, and read the detailed ones in particular. Look for students who mention getting insured, landing their first clients, or going on to work full time. Those are the outcomes that matter.

You can read stories from our students, including Shona, who went from an office job to a full-time nail tech here.

Online or in person: which is better?

Both can work well, and the right choice depends on how you learn. In-person training gives you instant feedback and hands-on correction, which is ideal for complete beginners. Online courses are brilliant for flexibility and for existing techs adding a new skill, as long as the course is accredited and includes feedback on your work.

At Blossom we offer both, so you can choose what suits your life. Check out our online courses here and in-person courses here.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to become a nail tech in the UK?

Most accredited beginner courses run from one to several days, followed by a few weeks of practice on friends and family before taking paying clients. Regulated diplomas like VTCT Level 3 take longer, usually several months.

Do I need a qualification to be a nail tech in the UK?

There's no single legal requirement, but you do need to be insured, and insurers require an accredited or recognised qualification.

How much does a nail course cost in the UK?

Prices vary widely depending on the course length, kit and accreditation. Always compare what's included (kit, certificate, aftercare support) rather than the headline price.

Is ABT accreditation recognised?

Yes. ABT is one of the UK's main accrediting bodies for beauty training, and ABT-accredited certificates are widely accepted by beauty insurers.
