Not sure what you actually need to get started as a nail tech? This practical checklist covers all the essential equipment and products for UK beginners - without the overwhelm.
One of the most common questions from new or aspiring nail techs is: what do I actually need to get started? It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of products and tools out there. This checklist cuts through the noise and covers exactly what you need and nothing you don't - as a UK beginner.
First, a Word of Advice
Wait until you've started (or chosen) your course before buying most of your kit. Your training provider should guide you on which specific products and brands work best with the system you're learning. Buying a load of products beforehand often means buying the wrong ones. That said, here's what every beginner gel polish technician will need.
The Essentials
UV/LED Nail Lamp
This is your most important piece of equipment. It cures the gel polish and makes it hard-wearing. Make sure the lamp is compatible with the gel system you're using - your course provider will usually recommend one. A quality lamp costs anywhere from £30 to £150+.
Gel Products
- Nail dehydrator and primer (essential for adhesion and preventing lifting)
- Base coat
- Gel polish colours (start with a small versatile range - nudes, pinks, a red, and one or two seasonal shades)
- Top coat (both glossy and matte are useful)
- Gel cleanser/wipe-off solution
Nail Prep and Finishing Tools
- Cuticle pusher and cuticle nippers
- Nail files (various grits)
- Buffer blocks
- Lint-free wipes (not cotton wool - fibres are a problem with gel)
- Orange wood sticks
Hygiene and Sanitation
- Hand sanitiser (for you and your client)
- Antibacterial spray for your desk and tools
- Disposable gloves
- Tool sterilising solution or UV steriliser box
- Disposable nail files (if you want to use fresh ones per client)
Client Comfort
- Nail desk or table with good lighting (a ring light or desk lamp is very useful)
- Nail cushion/armrest for your client
- Hand cream for after the treatment
Admin and Business
- Client consultation forms (essential - note any allergies or contraindications)
- Aftercare leaflets
- A booking system (even a simple shared calendar works to start with)
What About a Starter Kit?

At Blossom Academy, our Online Gel Polish Course includes a free tester kit so you have the basics to practice with from day one. It's a good way to try products before committing to full sizes.
